CPAN at UNDESA-DSPD Expert Group Meeting on “Implementation of the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008 – 2017)”, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

In preparations for the 70th UN General Assembly, UNDESA-DSPD organised an Expert Group Meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Implementation of the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty on 27-29 May 2015. The goal of the meeting was to prompt debate on the following issues:

  1. Identifying the lessons learned during the implementation of the Second UN Decade to eradicate poverty at the country, regional and global levels.

  2. What lessons can be leveraged to better deliver poverty eradication and employment creation

  3. How the United Nations system can contribute to promoting employment in the contexts of the Second UN Decade and post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals

  4. How full employment and decent work can be effectively mainstreamed into the activities of the United Nations system organizations

  5. Identifying strategies to more coherent UN policy responses to employment at the country level through agency specific programming

  6. Identifying strategies to share programmes and policies’ good practices to address inequalities among the extreme poor.

Chiara Mariotti, CPAN Research Officer participated in the discussion presenting the paper Challenges in eradicating chronic poverty: what policies for pro-poorest growth and decent work for all? Drawing from various research (Chronic Poverty Report 2014/2015, the Policy Guide on Employment), Chiara’s paper argued that (1) investing in pre- and post-primary education, (2) providing social assistance and universal health coverage, (3) investing in pro-poorest economic growth are  the most effective policy areas to tackle chronic poverty, prevent impoverishment and sustain escapes from poverty.
